Removing Fridge Odours

Refrigeration:

  • Food is properly refrigerated at a temperature range between 35-40° F or 2-6° C!

  • Freezing:

  • Food is properly frozen at a temperature range between -4 and 4° F or -20 and -15° C and needs to be in an air-tight container or zip-lock bag!

  • Cleaning the Fridge

  • Clean refrigerators and freezers about twice a month to help prevent odours from building up. Take out all the removable parts and clean the interior with a dishwashing liquid or a solution of baking soda and water.

  • To prevent mildew, occasionally wipe down the inside with white vinegar.

  • If there is frost in the freezer, allow it to defrost. WARNING Never use metal tools to scrape and pry the ice. If you damage the refrigeration system with a sharp object, it can result in an expensive repair bill.

  • Be sure to clean the condenser coils several times a year. Located at the back of the unit or the bottom of newer models, these serpentine-like coils help to disperse heat from the unit. The accumulation of dust acts as insulation lowering the unit's efficiency and raising the cost of running it. Clean the coil area by using either a condenser coil brush -- available through your appliance manufacturer or hardware store, or vacuum it using the crevice tool.

  • Don't forget to check your refrigerator's drip pan if there is one. This hidden area can develop odours from spilled food.

  • Keep the door gasket (seal) clean. Dirt build-up impairs the gasket's ability to keep the cold air in. In the long, run dirt and grime will make your refrigerator work harder, require more electricity to run it and even cause the system to prematurely fail. Wipe the gasket with a mild soap and water solution once a month. You can even go a step further and lightly moisturize the gaskets. It has been found that a Very light coat of Armorall after cleaning works very well.

  • To clean underneath the fridge, tie a sock around the end of a yardstick.

  • Removing Fridge Odours

  • Leave an open box of baking soda in the fridge at all times. Change at regular intervals.

  • Leave an open can of coffee grounds in the fridge to absorb odours.

  • Saturate a cotton ball in vanilla and leave in the refrigerator.

  • Place a bowl in the back of the refrigerator with a few briquettes of charcoal.
