Saving Time in the Grocery Store

  • Believe it or not the time you spend in the grocery store can save you money as well. Less time spent = less time to browse and get caught making an impulsive purchase.

  • Your personal time should have a dollar value of sorts. For example running to another grocery store to save a dollar on one item may not be worth your while. Even if it is only a couple of minutes away you still have to get in and out of your vehicle one extra time, spend extra on gas, find another parking spot, wait in another line up and navigate another grocery store tempting more impulse buying. If you are shopping at two stores make sure it is worth your while.

  • A Little organization can save you both time and money at the grocery store. Menu planning is a great step to organization. Before you go shopping sit down with the weekly flyer and create a menu for the week. You can take this a step further and write your favorite meals on index cards with all the ingredients needed listed on the back.

  • Mark your items when you get home so your family knows which ingredients may be used for snacks and which are reserved for meals. For example red stickers may mean don’t touch, and green could mark snack items. Stickers can be found at your local stationary store in a variety of colours, shapes and sizes. Now when you go to make lasagna three days after shopping you still have cottage cheese, so you don’t have to make a special trip to pick up one ingredient or decide to make something else.

  • Master lists are a must. Make sure they have all the items that you would make special trip to the store for, such as coffee, diapers, toilet paper, etc. Organize your list to the format of your favorite store to save further time while shopping. You should be able to enter your store, start at one end and finish at the other. Walking back and forth several times picking up items is a waste of your time.

  • Try to get your shopping done in the early morning. It is easier to find parking and the line-ups are not nearly as long. This can also save you money, as you will have first pick of the day old bakery and meat items.

  • Do a big shop once a month, at a bulk discount store. Stock up on non-perishable items, such as toothpaste and canned goods. This allows you to shorten your weekly shop even further by picking up only perishable items.

  • Ask to bag your own groceries. Bag items together as they are stored in your kitchen and house, to save time unpacking when you get home.

  • If you are unable to find parking close the door at least try to find one close to a buggy return, so you won’t have to walk far to pick up or drop off your buggy.

  • Of course doing your shopping online, and having your groceries delivered, could shorten this whole process even further.
