Grocery Shopping Lists

  • Create a master list using the last month’s worth of grocery receipts, browsing your cupboards and cookbooks. Most of us know what ingredients we need to have in our house at all times. Include items like diapers, milk, bread, toothpaste, cleaners, coffee. Anything and everything that you would make a special trip to the store for if you ran out.
  • You can create a basic master list in word or note pad. I recommend formatting your list according to the layout of your favorite store. Another idea is to create one in excel and include columns for coupons, prices, the lowest priced store (if you shop at more then one), etc.
  • A free shareware program can be found at www.homeplansoftware.com/shoplist.htm called Shopping List. It has categories and then a list of products under each category. You add, edit and delete the items according to what you use and the store prices in your area. This takes some time initially but is easier then preparing a spreadsheet.

  • Write your list on an envelope and then keep your coupons inside.

  • Post a copy of your master list on the fridge and in the pantry. If an item is used or moved from the pantry to the cupboard highlight the item on the appropriate list. Then the next time you go grocery shopping you know what you still have, what you absolutely need this week and what you are going to need in the coming weeks. (Just in case it is on sale.) These lists could also be posted near the freezer and where you store your toiletries and or cleaners.

  • Keep a copy of your master list in your purse or wallet. Then if you forget the completed one at home you can rely on it and recall as to which items have been used.
