Microwave Tips

Cleaning the Microwave

  • Use wax paper to cover dishes, to avoid unnecessary splatters.

  • If oven does not have a removable glass shelf, a plate or paper towel under food cooked directly on oven floor (such as baked potatoes) keeps it cleaner.

  • Wipe up spills at immediately. Wash regularly with mild detergent and water and rinse and wipe dry.

  • Don't forget to clean around the edge of the door and door opening, to prevent soil buildup, which could prevent the door closing tightly.

  • Add four tablespoons lemon juice to one-cup water in a microwave-safe bowl. Boil for five minutes in the microwave, allowing the steam to condense on the inside walls of the oven. Then wipe clean.

  • Never use abrasive pads or powders on oven.

  • Never use commercial oven cleaners in your microwave.

  • Microwave Tips

  • Even if you have a turntable dishes like stews and vegetables should be occasionally stirred to guarantee even heating.

  • Try to use shallow flat dishes to ensure even cooking.

  • Stay near the oven when preparing popcorn, heat buildup can cause a fire.

  • Keep a watchful eye on foods with lots of sugar.

  • Avoid using brown paper bags.

  • Don't dry or disinfect or dry clothing or other articles in the microwave because of the risk of fire.

  • Use only microwave-safe utensils.

  • Hot food melts some plastics, such as margarine tubs, causing migration of package constituents.

  • It's a good idea to use microwave safe glass for fatty foods.

  • Sparks or flashes indicate your dish of choice has some metal in it. Beware of plates with gold trim.

  • If a fire does start in your microwave, unplug and keep the door closed. Open the door only after the fire has extinguished.
