Grout

  • To remove mildew make a mixture of 3 cups of baking soda and 1 cup of warm water. Use an old toothbrush dipped in paste to brush on and scrub grout. If mildew remains add some bleach to mixture and scrub again.

  • Shower Curtains

  • To keep shower curtains sliding easily apply a thin coat of Vaseline petroleum jelly to the curtain rod.
  • Before hanging shower curtains, soak in a salt water solution to prevent mildew.
  • To remove mildew, wash in hot soapy water, rub with lemon juice and let the shower curtain dry in the sun.
  • For plastic curtains, clean with laundry pre-wash spray. Spray along the top, letting it run down to cover the curtain. Allow it to sit for a few minutes, then rinse it off.
  • To wash a shower curtain, fill the washing machine with warm water and two large bath towels. Add 1/2 cup each of detergent and baking soda. Then wash, adding 1 cup white vinegar to the rinse cycle. Do not spin dry or wash vinegar out. Hang immediately and wrinkles will disappear when completely dry.
  • Alternatively add a few drops of mineral oil to the rinse. This will clean the curtain and keep it soft and flexible.

  • Shower Doors

  • Water spots can easily be removed with rubbing alcohol.
  • Rub glass shower doors with a white vinegar-dampened sponge to remove soap residue.
  • After cleaning shower doors wipe the inside down with lemon oil (furniture polish). They will stay clean much longer.
  • Apply mineral oil over your shower doors and tile surface. That delays the mineral build-up in future use.
  • To clean shower track door, pour full strength vinegar into the track, let soak for a few minutes, then rinse.
  • A toothbrush and any spray cleaner works wonders on shower door runners.
  • A coat of acrylic floor finish gives new shine to fibreglass shower doors and makes water spots disappear.

  • Shower Heads

  • Vinegar will loosen mineral deposits, etc. from showerheads. Disassemble the head and soak it in vinegar. Then, use an old toothbrush to remove the loosened particles. Clean the showerhead holes with a pin or thin piece of wire.
  • NOTE: If shower head is metal, you can remove the rubber rusher and boil in a water and vinegar mixture for 15 minutes.

NOTE: If you are not able to remove shower head, fill a small plastic bag halfway with vinegar. Place the bag over the nozzle and secure with a heavy elastic band. Leave for at least half an hour.

    Tiles

  • Clean after a hot shower, or run the shower on hot for a couple of minutes before cleaning. The steam will loosen the dirt and make cleaning easier.
  • Mix a paste of baking soda and bleach for heavy cleaning jobs. Scrub the tiles with a stiff brush and paste. Rinse thoroughly.
  • Light mildew stains can be removed from your tiles by rubbing with a cut lemon.
  • After cleaning your tiles wipe with lemon oil to help keep water stains from building up. Will also make and keep tiles shinier for longer.
  • Apply a good paste wax to shower tiles and buff with a dry cloth to deter water spots.
